HOPE SHINES AT THE CANDLELIGHT CONCERT

Andrea Bocelli delivers a memorable performance at the fundraising gala

The spotlight shone brilliantly, a welcome sight to the hundreds who sat in the audience as the world-famous Andrea Bocelli took to Segerstrom Hall stage for the Candlelight Concert on Nov. 30. It was a special evening that brought together again numerous philanthropic individuals, families and companies – including South Coast Plaza – to raise funds for Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Led by honorary chair Elizabeth Segerstrom, co-managing partner at South Coast Plaza, and co-chairs Carol Perry and Britt Meyer, the event provided critical funds to benefit the center’s artistic programming and education initiatives as well as new endeavors such as ballet commissions, productions, and world premieres.

”This year’s 47th Candlelight concert marks the beginning of a new, exciting chapter for us all here at Segerstrom Center for the Arts,” Segerstrom said. “We’ve all grown exponentially in this past year, inspiring us to set the bar even higher for all that’s to come! Segerstrom Center for the Arts has always strived to bring the best of the best, both nationally and internationally, to our audiences here in Southern California – but now ‘coming together’ has an all-new meaning, and in such, we are working to ensure the year ahead marks a time for wonderful innovation and revolution in our programming.”

The gala began with a 13-song performance by Bocelli that included memorable duets with singer Pia Toscano and opera sensation Maria Aleida. The sweetest duet, no doubt, was a rendition of “Hallulejah” with Bocelli’s nine-year old daughter, Virginia Bocelli, during which Bocelli provided accompaniment with an acoustic guitar. He later gifted the instrument to the center to auction off.

Following the performance was the dramatic unveiling of the opulent dining hall, the immersive design of which was inspired by an Italian palazzo, surrounded on three sides by arched windows that simulated the effect of looking out at a verdant landscape. Chef Ross Pangilinan of South Coast Plaza’s Terrace by Mix Mix created a menu with a nod to Italy, while Chef Tony Esnault and Pastry Chef Germain Biotteau of Knife Pleat, also at South Coast Plaza, presented the holiday season-inspired dessert.

Candlelight remains the performing arts center’s top philanthropic event. Its return to Segerstrom Hall was especially poignant, symbolizing resilience and optimism in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has always strived to bring the best of the best, both nationally and internationally, to our audiences here in Southern California – but now ‘coming together’ has an all-new meaning, and in such, we are working to ensure the year ahead marks a time for wonderful innovation and revolution in our programming.

VIEW THE EXCLUSIVE STELLA SHARED 3 EXHIBIT

Stella McCartney’s collab
with Next-Gen Artists

The Stella Shared 3 collection – a capsule of conscious unisex staples in partnership with three artists – is the subject of a new and exclusive exhibit on level 2, Carousel Court.

The collection speaks the same language as the Winter 2021 ready-to-wear collection, but in the words of the next generation. Inspired by “Y is for Youth” from the McCartney A to Z Manifesto, the British fashion house offers its platform to three creative forces: Ed Curtis in London, Maisie Broome (Myfawnwy) in New York City and Tom Tosseyn in Antwerp, forming both a collective and a collection. With a club-kid perspective blending fantasy and reality, their prints are featured  on  iconic  Stella  archetypes  elevated  through  collaboration  and  shared  communities.

“For my McCartney A to Z Manifesto, I shared my platform with next-gen artists who interpreted our values through their visions. Stella Shared 3 continues this spirit of collaboration today, remixing indisputably Stella pieces with prints by incredible talents of tomorrow – collectively advancing by sharing our respective skills, resources and communities,” says Stella McCartney.

THE STELLA SHARED 3

The Stella Shared 3 palette pairs neutrals with youthful bursts of colour, including prints eccentrically clashing classics with contemporary fantasies. Rich green and purple vegan Fur Free Fur elaborates on this vivid narrative, delivering a moment of texture as hoodies and on the uppers of 90s-inspired ECONYL® regenerated nylon puffers.

Bringing a progressive positivity to the Stella Shared 3 collective is Myfawnwy, an artist and designer based in Queens, New York City – celebrated for her hand-marbled prints and faces on painted suns and flowers. These signature styles beam across silk sets, including coordinated short- sleeved button-ups and voluminous track trousers, boxer shorts and a crewneck jumper. Her iconic faces additionally shine optimistically on organic cotton jersey t-shirts and dresses as well as pale yellow hoodies.

Myfawnwy x Stella McCartney

Continuing this counter-cultural aesthetic, South London-based artist and slow fashion designer Ed Curtis brought his organic, optical prints to reversible puffer jackets in regenerated nylon, coordinated with voluminous trousers. This visual narrative is elaborated on by laser-printed denim pieces and graphics clashing on knitwear, a first for Curtis. His free-handed, spray-painted interpretation of the Stella logo is blown up across furry knits, chunky rollnecks and crewnecks, while his psychedelic prints trip out across coordinated, roomy sweat sets in organic cotton.

Across vegan accessories, Ed Curtis’ spray-painted take on the Stella logo is embroidered on the iconic Falabella bag in mini and maxi sizes. It also features prominently on vegan Logo bags and wallets in smooth Alter Mat, and cruelty-free Fur Free Fur totes – a youthful, relevant addition to Stella Shared 3’s offering.

Ed Curtis x Stella McCartney

Antwerp-based graphic artist Tom Tosseyn has shared environmental and sustainable values, reinterpreting the Stella logo in his futuristic style and adding the slogan “Restoring the balance.” He transforms the ‘S’ into both lightning bolt and yin yang symbols, whilst simultaneously extrapolating it into a series of alliterative words that represent sustainability to him like ‘Sky,’ ‘Safe’ and ‘Strawberry’ – riffing on the McCartney A to Z Manifesto. His design is featured on functional luxury pieces like military-inspired parka bombers, utilitarian denim sets, knitwear, voluminous fleece sets and organic cotton leisurewear.

The Stella Stan Smith, the first-ever vegan iteration of the classic adidas style, is remixed with Ed Curtis’ and Myfawnwy’s graphics. The latter artist’s iconic smiling faces also burst optimistically in pink on the sustainable Loop sneaker. The Reclypse trainer is reimagined in a fluoro yellow colorway – made with a recycled polyester upper and a tractor sole using bio-based, renewable raw materials.

The capsule makes vintage-inspired knit accessories current including bucket hats, balaclavas and mittens. Classic baseball caps are energetically elevated with psychedelic prints. Rounding out a complete wardrobe offering, Ed Curtis’ psychedelic prints step up socks and tights in vibrant colorways.

Bringing a conscience to the fashion industry, Stella Shared 3 is made with sustainable materials including organic cotton jersey and denim, recycled nylon, regenerated cashmere and traceable, responsible wool from regenerative farms.

The exhibit will be on display through Friday, Oct. 29.

OCMA HOSTS
ITS FIRST
ART SENSE GALA

The Event Raised $1 Million for the Museum under construction

Exactly a year ahead of its public opening date, the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) held its first Art Sense Gala at the construction site of the museum’s new building next to the South Coast Plaza campus.

The sold-out gala with a futuristic theme drew 280 guests and netted $1 million for the museum and its operations.

Located at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the new building was designed by Morphosis Architects under the direction of Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne and Partner-in-Charge Brandon Welling, both of whom were present. OCMA is being built on land given as a gift in 1998 by the Segerstrom Family and South Coast Plaza as part of their vision and long-standing commitment to the arts..

After being introduced by Anton Segerstrom, OCMA trustee and Partner at South Coast Plaza, Heidi Zuckerman, the dynamic new CEO and Director of OCMA, said, “You’re all living the profound, but yet simple vision that was put together by 13 audacious women 60 years ago next year. You are bringing the best of modern and contemporary art here to Orange County to be shared by our community, but also our nation and everyone who comes here to visit.

I believe access to art is a basic human right. It’s not a privilege. That’s what we are doing here. Your support of OCMA is transforming lives.

HEIDI ZUCKERMAN, CEO AND DIRECTOR OF ORANGE COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

The gala guests included Jennifer Segerstrom, Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Casey Reitz and Naomi Reitz, artists Jennifer Guidi and Sarah Cain, Sean and Aga Green, recent Michelin-star awardees Yassmin Sarmardi and Tony Esnault of Knife Pleat at South Coast Plaza, Paul and Lilly Merage, Bob Olson, Lucy Sun and Warren Felson, Raj and Marta Bhathal, Teri Kennady, Alison Beaumont Hoeven, Britt Meyer, Carl and Janet Nolet, Ken and Stephanie Grody, Jim Pick and Rosalyn Laudati, and Pat and Aleeza Maciariello.

Candlelight Kickoff Shines At Noguchi’s Sculpture Garden https://www.southcoastplaza.com/stories/2021/10/candlelight-kickoff-at-noguchi/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 18:58:21 +0000 https://www.southcoastplaza.com/?p=62158

CANDLELIGHT KICKOFF SHINES AT NOGUCHI’S SCULPTURE GARDEN

Segerstrom Centers for the Arts celebrates the return to the arts with its annual fundraiser

California Scenario, Isamu Noguchi’s paradigmatic sculpture garden in Costa Mesa, was the dramatic setting for a recent private reception and special performances for Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ (SCFTA) Candlelight Kick-Off. The event celebrated the return of Candlelight Concert, SCFTA’s signature annual fundraiser in the fall.

For Elizabeth Segerstrom, Co-Managing Partner at South Coast Plaza and this year’s Candlelight Concert Honorary Chair, the venue was especially meaningful. Her late husband, Henry T. Segerstrom, and the Segerstrom family, commissioned California Scenario in 1979 to be built adjacent to the South Coast Plaza campus and Segerstrom Center for the Arts, as part of Henry’s expansive vision to bring together art, culture, philanthropy and commerce in one cosmopolitan epicenter.

Elizabeth Segerstrom and Benjamin Millepied

During the reception, Elizabeth Segerstrom and Candlelight Concert Co-Chairs Carol Perry and Britt Meyer warmly welcomed guests at the sculpture garden. Lead sponsorships by Tiffany & Co. and luxury conglomerate LVMH (of which Tiffany & Co. is part) were announced. Both Tiffany & Co. and the LVMH Group have a major retail presence at South Coast Plaza. Highlights of the evening included special performances by Benjamin Millepied’s LA Dance Project.

Dancers performed excerpts from Night Bloom, a new work choreographed by Janie Taylor. The performances were adapted to the spacious sections of California Scenario, a garden that evokes California’s unique and diverse landscape, including forests and deserts. These were the first performances by a major dance company at the iconic sculpture garden.  Live music by Brenna Whitaker and her Little Big Band completed the entertainment for the night.

VISIT OUR EXCLUSIVE GUCCI 100TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBIT

in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court from October 1-23

Rare is the luxury fashion house that continues to be significant, relevant and exciting after 100 years of existence. Gucci has reached this major milestone, celebrating its centennial in spectacular style with a special collection and an exclusive exhibit in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court October 1-23. The exhibit and our Gucci boutique will feature Gucci 100, a collection of ready-to-wear and accessories that pays homage to the history of the house, with a focus on music.

It isn’t a revisionist attempt to rummage through the past: if anything, mine is a ‘reverse’ revisionism of the house’s history, stitched back together by a piercing note, a melody, a refrain.

ALESSANDRO MICHELE, GUCCI CREATIVE DIRECTOR

FROM THE ARCHIVES

The capsule collection also showcases the history of the maison, including prints and fabrics from the archive.

Gucci 100 bags with reimagined red and green colors and stripes pay tribute to Gucci’s history.

100 YEARS OF GUCCI IN MUSIC

Gucci 100 manifests a deep connection between two universal languages, the language of clothing as an expression of personal identity and the language of music that recalls a collective memory. It all begins with reflections on a number: 22,705. This is the extraordinary number of songs in which the word “Gucci” appears among the lyrics from 1921 until today, according to Musixmatch, the music data company that manages the world’s largest archive of music lyrics and has collaborated with the maison for this research.

“It isn’t a revisionist attempt to rummage through the past: if anything, mine is a ‘reverse’ revisionism of the house’s history, stitched back together by a piercing note, a melody, a refrain,” Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele said. “Also because, if I were to depict Gucci, for me it would be an eternal teenager who hangs out at places where music is heard and played.”

Ready-to-wear and accessories feature the Gucci 100 logo or are adorned with verses from three songs chosen by Michele from among the tracks that mention the brand, including “And The Men Notice You With Your Gucci Bag Crew” by Amy Winehouse in 2003.

“The R” (1988) by Eric B. & Rakim

“Music is Mine Gucci Seats Reclined”, from the song “The R” (1988) by Eric B. & Rakim

You Got Good Taste” (1983) by The Cramps

The last song is also from the ’80s, “This One’s Dedicated To All You Gucci Bag Carriers Out There It’s Called You Got Good Taste” from “You Got Good Taste” (1983) by rock band “The Cramps”

The centennial, for me, represents an opportunity to bear witness to Gucci’s eternal vitality that year after year, is reborn, it renews itself, reestablishing an unusual relationship with contemporaneity as a boy, forever young, observing the world with a powerful vision. I recognized the manifestation of its youth in its having intercepted and traversed, for one hundred years now, popular culture in all its forms. Above all, in music: the only medium, aside from fashion, more reactive to the times that mutate and mark the new, the today, the now.
