SOUTH COAST PLAZA CELEBRATES OCMA AND THE ARTS

Orange County Museum of Art debuts its new $95-million architectural jewel at Segerstrom Center for the Arts

After years of dedication and effort by OC arts patrons and museum board members, including significant support from South Coast Plaza and its owners, the Orange County Museum of Art has completed its move to Costa Mesa. Finally! The opening of a visual arts museum on the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus completes the Segerstrom family’s vision for an expansive and inclusive center of art, culture, and commerce, which has long been part of the grand design for greater South Coast Plaza.

A 24-hour grand opening celebration, attended by more than 10,000 guests who waited patiently in hours-long lines that wound around the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus, officially opened OCMA. The free event was the public’s first opportunity to tour the new, 53,000-square-foot museum designed by Morphosis Architects, under the direction of Pritzker-prize winner Thom Mayne and Partner-in-Charge Brandon Welling and explore its five inaugural exhibitions, activating the museum with music, food, films, yoga, dancing, and more.

The 24-Hour Grand Opening event culminated two weeks’ worth of events that began with the Million Dollar Donor Dinner, chaired by Jennifer and Anton Segerstrom and sponsored by Cartier. OCMA CEO and Director Heidi Zuckerman welcomed guests to the first official event at the new museum. She acknowledged the generosity of lead donors, including Jennifer and Anton Segerstrom, the most significant supporters of the museum to date.

OCMA OPENING GALA

A few days later the Opening Gala raised more than $2.1 million for the museum and honored artist Sanford Biggers, whose sculpture sits on the museum’s expansive outdoor plaza where the dinner was held. The gala was chaired by Jennifer Segerstrom and co-chaired by Lisa Merage, was presented by lead sponsor South Coast Plaza, and included table sponsorships by Gucci, Saint Laurent, Kering/Balenciaga/Alexander McQueen, Jennifer and Anton Segerstrom, and Elizabeth Segerstrom. Laurent Claquin, head of Kering Americas, was one of many guests from the worlds of luxury retail, fashion, and art that are centered at South Coast Plaza.

The opening festivities actually began last spring with a fashion event for Orange County Museum of Art trustees and donors sponsored by South Coast Plaza. For guests anticipating the Opening Gala who were wondering what the Utopian Black Tie dress suggestion meant, South Coast Plaza stylists Kim Apodaca and Jackie Rose offered an inspirational style preview at OCMAExpand, the museum’s interim location. Models descended the stairs in exquisite ensembles from Valentino, Lanvin, Thom Browne, Gucci, Monique Lhuillier, Roger Vivier, Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, and Lafayette 148 New York. The stylists got creative, demonstrating how much a change in clutch or shoes can impact a look.

Additional opening celebrations for the new museum included the Artist and Artworld Party, which welcomed artists, longtime OCMA contributors and Southern California cultural leaders, as well as a Civic Dedication that inaugurated the building and brought together Orange County’s civic leaders. Anton Segerstrom spoke at all the opening galas and the civic dedication, thanking donors, the architects, and all those who helped inspire and fund the museum’s big move to Costa Mesa.

As part of the extensive and overwhelmingly positive national and local media coverage of the new museum, the Orange County Register said that “the museum’s opening means nothing less than the end of Anton Segerstrom’s 16-year personal quest to see this permanent location built in Costa Mesa, the fruition of an $8 million gift from him and his wife, Jennifer, and the fulfillment of their years of fundraising many more millions.”

“My father Henry Segerstrom told me years ago that all great civilizations have a cultural component,” Anton said in the Register story and in his remarks at the openings. “It was the impetus for the creation of Segerstrom Center for the Arts.”

HOPE SHINES AT THE CANDLELIGHT CONCERT

Andrea Bocelli delivers a memorable performance at the fundraising gala

The spotlight shone brilliantly, a welcome sight to the hundreds who sat in the audience as the world-famous Andrea Bocelli took to Segerstrom Hall stage for the Candlelight Concert on Nov. 30. It was a special evening that brought together again numerous philanthropic individuals, families and companies – including South Coast Plaza – to raise funds for Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Led by honorary chair Elizabeth Segerstrom, co-managing partner at South Coast Plaza, and co-chairs Carol Perry and Britt Meyer, the event provided critical funds to benefit the center’s artistic programming and education initiatives as well as new endeavors such as ballet commissions, productions, and world premieres.

”This year’s 47th Candlelight concert marks the beginning of a new, exciting chapter for us all here at Segerstrom Center for the Arts,” Segerstrom said. “We’ve all grown exponentially in this past year, inspiring us to set the bar even higher for all that’s to come! Segerstrom Center for the Arts has always strived to bring the best of the best, both nationally and internationally, to our audiences here in Southern California – but now ‘coming together’ has an all-new meaning, and in such, we are working to ensure the year ahead marks a time for wonderful innovation and revolution in our programming.”

The gala began with a 13-song performance by Bocelli that included memorable duets with singer Pia Toscano and opera sensation Maria Aleida. The sweetest duet, no doubt, was a rendition of “Hallulejah” with Bocelli’s nine-year old daughter, Virginia Bocelli, during which Bocelli provided accompaniment with an acoustic guitar. He later gifted the instrument to the center to auction off.

Following the performance was the dramatic unveiling of the opulent dining hall, the immersive design of which was inspired by an Italian palazzo, surrounded on three sides by arched windows that simulated the effect of looking out at a verdant landscape. Chef Ross Pangilinan of South Coast Plaza’s Terrace by Mix Mix created a menu with a nod to Italy, while Chef Tony Esnault and Pastry Chef Germain Biotteau of Knife Pleat, also at South Coast Plaza, presented the holiday season-inspired dessert.

Candlelight remains the performing arts center’s top philanthropic event. Its return to Segerstrom Hall was especially poignant, symbolizing resilience and optimism in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has always strived to bring the best of the best, both nationally and internationally, to our audiences here in Southern California – but now ‘coming together’ has an all-new meaning, and in such, we are working to ensure the year ahead marks a time for wonderful innovation and revolution in our programming.

ITS FIRST
ART SENSE GALA

The Event Raised $1 Million for the Museum under construction

Exactly a year ahead of its public opening date, the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) held its first Art Sense Gala at the construction site of the museum’s new building next to the South Coast Plaza campus.

The sold-out gala with a futuristic theme drew 280 guests and netted $1 million for the museum and its operations.

Located at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the new building was designed by Morphosis Architects under the direction of Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne and Partner-in-Charge Brandon Welling, both of whom were present. OCMA is being built on land given as a gift in 1998 by the Segerstrom Family and South Coast Plaza as part of their vision and long-standing commitment to the arts..

After being introduced by Anton Segerstrom, OCMA trustee and Partner at South Coast Plaza, Heidi Zuckerman, the dynamic new CEO and Director of OCMA, said, “You’re all living the profound, but yet simple vision that was put together by 13 audacious women 60 years ago next year. You are bringing the best of modern and contemporary art here to Orange County to be shared by our community, but also our nation and everyone who comes here to visit.

I believe access to art is a basic human right. It’s not a privilege. That’s what we are doing here. Your support of OCMA is transforming lives.

HEIDI ZUCKERMAN, CEO AND DIRECTOR OF ORANGE COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

The gala guests included Jennifer Segerstrom, Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Casey Reitz and Naomi Reitz, artists Jennifer Guidi and Sarah Cain, Sean and Aga Green, recent Michelin-star awardees Yassmin Sarmardi and Tony Esnault of Knife Pleat at South Coast Plaza, Paul and Lilly Merage, Bob Olson, Lucy Sun and Warren Felson, Raj and Marta Bhathal, Teri Kennady, Alison Beaumont Hoeven, Britt Meyer, Carl and Janet Nolet, Ken and Stephanie Grody, Jim Pick and Rosalyn Laudati, and Pat and Aleeza Maciariello.

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO
WINTER COLLECTION

Philanthropy Meets Fashion in Show Benefitting Working Wardrobes

“Future Positive” was the hopeful theme of the winter collection shown by the South Coast Plaza Salvatore Ferragamo boutique at a private philanthropic event in Irvine recently. Presented by South Coast Plaza in partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo, the runway show raised funds for Working Wardrobes.

The collection drew inspiration from motorcycles, athletics, scuba, military elements, among others, to reflect a utopia in which “diversity and positivity come together to transform the world into a better place,” according to the Salvatore Ferragamo collection notes.

Shirts, mohair knits, footwear and accessories were presented in monochrome against bursts of color.

Capes and coats coexisted with utility parkas and casual tailoring, while fine gauge knits featured technical accents and an abstract camouflage pattern.

A constellation of draped jersey dresses shone throughout the lineup.

Space-biker boots, scuba sock sneakers and rubberized nappa clogs appeared along a sleek interpretation of Salvatore Ferragamo’s signature F-heel, adorned with rhinestones and a luminous galvanized finish.

The collection also focused on sustainability, featuring numerous materials and components made responsibly, from leather tanned without chrome or other metals to wool and cashmere derived from pre- and post-consumer recycled fibers.

Wooden soles, for example, came from certified and responsibly managed forests, while vegetable tanned leather underwent a certified production process with low environmental impact. Some leather items were made from 100 percent recycled materials.

The message within the collection was clear: The future looks positive when we value what we use from the world we live in.

Candlelight Kickoff Shines At Noguchi’s Sculpture Garden https://www.southcoastplaza.com/stories/2021/10/candlelight-kickoff-at-noguchi/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 18:58:21 +0000 https://www.southcoastplaza.com/?p=62158

CANDLELIGHT KICKOFF SHINES AT NOGUCHI’S SCULPTURE GARDEN

Segerstrom Centers for the Arts celebrates the return to the arts with its annual fundraiser

California Scenario, Isamu Noguchi’s paradigmatic sculpture garden in Costa Mesa, was the dramatic setting for a recent private reception and special performances for Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ (SCFTA) Candlelight Kick-Off. The event celebrated the return of Candlelight Concert, SCFTA’s signature annual fundraiser in the fall.

For Elizabeth Segerstrom, Co-Managing Partner at South Coast Plaza and this year’s Candlelight Concert Honorary Chair, the venue was especially meaningful. Her late husband, Henry T. Segerstrom, and the Segerstrom family, commissioned California Scenario in 1979 to be built adjacent to the South Coast Plaza campus and Segerstrom Center for the Arts, as part of Henry’s expansive vision to bring together art, culture, philanthropy and commerce in one cosmopolitan epicenter.

Elizabeth Segerstrom and Benjamin Millepied

During the reception, Elizabeth Segerstrom and Candlelight Concert Co-Chairs Carol Perry and Britt Meyer warmly welcomed guests at the sculpture garden. Lead sponsorships by Tiffany & Co. and luxury conglomerate LVMH (of which Tiffany & Co. is part) were announced. Both Tiffany & Co. and the LVMH Group have a major retail presence at South Coast Plaza. Highlights of the evening included special performances by Benjamin Millepied’s LA Dance Project.

Dancers performed excerpts from Night Bloom, a new work choreographed by Janie Taylor. The performances were adapted to the spacious sections of California Scenario, a garden that evokes California’s unique and diverse landscape, including forests and deserts. These were the first performances by a major dance company at the iconic sculpture garden.  Live music by Brenna Whitaker and her Little Big Band completed the entertainment for the night.

SHOP THE MUST-HAVE FALL LOOKS FROM THE HARVESTERS FASHION SHOW

Fashion for Philanthropy Benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County

If color is a sign of the style mood for the season, then fall must be all about optimism. At this year’s Harvesters Fashion Show by South Coast Plaza, bold and vibrant hues were a welcome and uplifting sight, a sign of hope or a portent of better days ahead. Produced exclusively for the Harvesters philanthropic organization to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, the runway show featured select fall highlights from 11 South Coast Plaza’s boutiques – Chloé, Isabel Marant, Lanvin, Marni, Moncler, Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, Versace and The Webster.

Some standouts:  Chloé’s peach and white long graceful dress with dramatic long straps draping down the back and Monique Lhuillier’s sand-hued wedding gown decorated with flower ruffles were among the favorite pale-hued looks.
